World Mental Health Day 2021

Monday 11th October 2021

World Mental Health Day was yesterday, 10th October. The theme for this year focused on 'Mental Health In An Unequal World'.

Since the Covid-19 pandemic Mental Health cases have doubled with twice as many people being diagnosed with depression.

So, what can you do to help someone who might be suffering?

-Check in regularly: You never know how someone is feeling on the inside and those battling with mental health issues are usually the best at hiding their feelings with a big smile on their face. Having quality time with those in your team can make it easier to spot anything out of the ordinary and allow them to come to you for help and support.

-Do your own research: It's all well and good being an excellent listener but if you don't understand what the person is going through you might be feeling stuck on what support to offer them. There is plenty of information online and professionals you can speak to for a better understanding.

-Be patient: It can be hard to open up and so you have to give the person space. Once you've established a good working relationship, allow them the time to speak to you when they feel comfortable. You might just be the first person they turn to.

-Be kind and reassuring: It might seem like the most simple piece of advice but it's surprising how we may appear to others. You can find yourself stuck in 'work mode' and therefore your reassurance might seem too professional. Just remember we are all human and what might seem very insignificant to you could be crucial to someone else.
